It was only four months ago when Clelia Lopes was a mere homemaker shopping at Newark’s Seabra Supermarket. Her husband was a construction foreman. They both came to the United States from Portugal over 30 years ago. They were both hoping to win the $126 million Mega Millions jackpot when they bought a ticket on July 22.
As hopeful as they were, they forgot to check their lottery ticket when the numbers were read that night. They didn’t even check their numbers the next day. In fact, it wasn’t until four months later when they realized they were the winners of the jackpot.
So far, they don’t have any plans to visit their Cherry Hill area Mercedes-Benz dealer and splurging on a new car. “We’re working people,” they said through a family friend. But once they get accustomed to having the money, they may just change their mind.
