• The 4MATIC is the name of a four-wheel drive system that was developed by Mercedes-Benz.
• The system is especially useful for driving through a variety of terrain, but it is most useful in slippery driving conditions.
• Almost all Mercedes-Benz vehicles with the 4MATIC system have an automatic transmission as standard equipment.
• The name 4MATIC comes from a derivation of 4-wheel drive and automatic.
• The first 4MATIC system was used on the E-Class saloon in 1986.
• Some newer versions of the system keep the AWD locked in at all times whereas previous versions caused damage to the vehicle if used on pavement.
• The 4MATIC system is available on the entire lineup of SUVs manufactured by Mercedes-Benz as well as many other model lineups, including the C-Class, R-Class and others.
