A recent article in Reader’s Digest explored some stories in which illegal drivers have ruined lives in recent years. Olga Marina Franco del Cid, an illegal immigrant from Guatemala without a valid driver’s license, plowed into a school bus last year. The collision killed four children and injured several others. As if that’s not bad enough, the same driver was caught driving illegally in 2006 when she drove into someone’s yard. She was fined $182 and then she was let go.
Stories like this are tragic. What’s even worse is that they are caused by people who shouldn’t be driving in the first place. The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles estimates there are “tens of thousands” of unlicensed drivers on New York roads alone. In California, police issued more than 132,000 tickets and citations to unlicensed drivers in 2008. “People act like it’s their right to drive whether they’re licensed or not,” said John Shetsel, the Oklahoma County Sheriff. “They don’t care, and they put other people at risk as a result.”
