Research your car before going to the mechanic. If you still have the owner’s manual to your car, read it from front to back. Learn as much about your car before you go to the mechanic so you will know if they are trying to sell you something that doesn’t belong in your car. Also, memorize the maintenance schedule so you’ll know if you’re due for some preventative procedures instead of agreeing to it thousands of miles in advance.

Look for second opinions. Reputable mechanics shouldn’t get offended or angry if you take your car somewhere else for a second opinion. When you go to a second mechanic, don’t tell them what the previous mechanic said just so you can get an accurate opinion. If they contradict each other, consider taking your car for a third opinion.

Ask a lot of questions. Don’t just take what the mechanic says for granted. Ask why you need certain parts and services and how much it’s going to cost. Ask them for a list of parts and the cost for each and do your own research before agreeing to the repairs. If they are grossly overcharging for parts, try going somewhere else.

Hypermilers have made a point to tell people to “slow down” if they want to save gas. One hypermiler – Ramon Schmidt – has put this habit to the test. He has found that each of his vehicles get at least 40 miles to the gallon. “I prefer to invest my money, rather than spend it on (gas),” he said. “And if I don’t have to spend it, why do it?” He lives by the mantra that a “heavy foot makes your wallet lighter.”

By slowing down and keeping your car maintained (proper tire pressure, clean spark plugs and air filter), you can save two or three miles for ever gallon!
